Steve replied to Deano's discussion 'Going tubeless cheaply'
"Biggest make or break factors are rim type and tire choice. For me and my rims, ghetto works really well.   I use UST tires on non-tubeless rims, and everything else is ghetto. Valves cut from my extensive stock of rooted tubes, one layer of…"

"I've raised this with Stromlo management and I was told they would look at installing more prominent signs - but it never happened. I'd encourage you all to drop them a line too - maybe they'll get the message one day.   I damn…"

Steve replied to Mark J's discussion 'Kowen'
"Yup, the new track is sweet, and still expanding. Went out on Sunday along with half of Canberra's MTB community it seems. Easy to find, well signed with pinky/orangey ribbons and blue arrows, plus lots of tire tracks! Otherwise there's…"

Steve replied to Third Idiot's discussion 'New to Canberra - where do I start'
"QLD to Canberra!? Lucky you!   There's not much you couldn't tackle on a SS. Parts of Majura are pretty steep, and parts of Stromlo have reasonably sustained climbs, but plenty of folks tackle both without much trouble. Hopefully by…"

Milto replied to Steve's discussion 'Keep an eye out for stolen bling...'
"Last bike I knew of that got stolen turned about to be sold by the police at their auction. The serial number and full details were known by the police. Maybe you need to keep an eye on the police auction in about 6 months?    "

Steve replied to Andy Ewart's discussion 'Computers/GPS systems'
"It's hard to go past the all singing, all dancing 705. Battery life is very good comparatively.   Open source maps will save your hard-earned and are actually very good for cycling. It takes a little while to get your head around how to…"

Steve replied to Snakehips's discussion 'Anyone know how to make very white lights more 'yellow'?'
"I am an electronics engineer, happy to do one-off stuff like this. I just figured you probably wouldn't want to modify your new Ayups! If Stuart sends the link and you work out which CREE to get then I can help you swap them out."

Steve replied to Snakehips's discussion 'Anyone know how to make very white lights more 'yellow'?'
"Great idea Stu. Didn't know about the lenses - shame they only do primary colours! If the cellophane is too much colour, the gel I mentioned will do the same thing but in a less obvious way. It should also cause less light reduction."

Steve replied to Snakehips's discussion 'Anyone know how to make very white lights more 'yellow'?'
"Ayups don't run bulbs at all, they run LED's. The LED's Ayup use are probably selected for high brightness, with little regard to other qualities. After all, big numbers followed by the word "lumens" sell more lights!! The…"

Steve replied to Matt D's discussion 'Jerrabomberra trails?'
"A quick search of the JRA website turned up no mention of mountain biking. Trail bikes on the other hand are mentioned repeatedly in the minutes. I did find this gem, which appears to sum up their position: "MINUTES OF THE COMMITTEE MEETING…"
