New to single speed - chain jumps off when I hit the trails

As a new devotee of SS - quiet, FAST and SO efficient - I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice...I converted my old light hard tail with a surly singleator tensioner - mostly I'm using this SS to commute to work (wish I'd done it ages ago, I'm so in love with my 'new-old bike') - when I hit any vaguely bumpy dirt trail (over roots for example) my chain's off quick smart. There's no slipping when I'm standing uphills etc. Should I adjust the tensioner? Is this a common issue? Thanks all.See More

Tips for fund raising rides

Hi, I wonder whether anyone has any tips for raising $$$ through doing charity bike rides. We've listed a few things on The Berm (unwanted prizes). We're doing sausage sizzles at Woollies and Bunnings. But any other good ideas? We're cycling a four seated tandem 800km through the Kimberley (The Gibb Challenge). There'll be 400 cyclists plus support teams, TV coverage - being on a four seated tandem will ensure everyone talks to us, we'll happily promote product etc.So if you know any good fund…See More

Hiya Helen, cheers for the reply. Currently living in kingston. Happy to ride any rides really. Fitness needs improved but working hard to get that back up. I'm around most days and evenings but night rides are out until I get a new battery pack for my lights (full test last night showed the battery pack to have deteriorated a lot). Give me a shout if you are heading out?

Helen,

Things you need to know re: Single Speed conversion.
1) If you don't have horizontal dropouts then you will need a chain tensioner - personally I think they spoil the asthetics. Alternatively you can play around with the size of the front and rear chain rings and the chain length until you find one that fits perfectly - this may be too time consuming for a bike shop to do.
2) You need to know what gear ratio to run i.e. 32 :18. Where 32 is the front chain ring and 18 the rear spocket. It's best to spin (great for cardio) as a SS, which means an easier gearing maybe 32:20. To find out what suits you put your bike in the middle ring (which will be 32) and go climb Stromlo with it in the rear spocket with 18 teeth. It's now your call whether to make the gearing easier or harder and then get the bike shop to set it up as this gearing.

As an SS'er remember momentum is your friend so don't get to hills and slow - you need to attack, stand and pedal, then walk when you need to. As momentum is your friend 29'ers make great SS'ers because they roll over bumps - seriously consider going to a 29'er.

Now go out and ride and enjoy the serenity of no gears chattering and not having to think about changing gears. Oh yes there are two side effects 1) you will get respect from other riders and 2) your fitness will go throught the roof.

Enjoy
