Mogo - Snake Track loop

Included on this site because half of Canberra heads to the coast whenever there's a public holiday!

To find the tracks made famous by the Angry Doctor race head south from Batemans Bay on the Princes Highway and drive through Mogo. About 1km or so after Mogo you'll see a right turn into Maulbrooks Road. Set your odometer and head up this road for 5km. After 5km of mostly dirt road you'll see a junction with Dam Road and a shelter with a trail map in it. That's the start of the signposted loop.

Here's the signposted circuit that's just under 14kms. It's got steep stuff and the famous fast bermed singletrack:

The loop goes anti-clockwise and the Snake Track section is in the last 6k or so.

Rode this loop a couple of times over Easter 2011.  The track that cuts through the middle is still cluttered with fallen trees, but the rest is in pretty good order, and well sign posted.  There are one or two new sections of track, presumably to get around some areas that have been rehabilitated, or retaken by the forest in the wind storms of September 2010.  The trails are good for novice to experienced, and we took our 11 year old son around with us.  The long up hills on the fire trail sections were a bit much for him, but he loved the flowy downhills that came later.

Ok all Bermers. I rode down there this eve. There has been much clearing, but the job is not finished. Perhaps a few of us strolling down with a bit of time and a bush saw or three would make a big difference, although there are a few biggies that will need a chainsaw.
Simply, the first uphill is great, with just one tree near the start. I took the shorter loop (straight ahead where the sign with the green arrows points right onto Dam Rd) and got 200 great metres in, before trogging through many trees and very little riding through to where the singletrack leaves fire road at the start of the AST. The AST is in great shape. There were fresh moto tracks here, as well as on the uphill before the Dam Rd turn off so I deduced that I'd have found no problem trees if I'd have gone that way (correct? no idea).
After the first skull+crossbones caution road crossing sign, where the track descends to the two little creek crossings the saw work finished and the trees across were thick and unpleasant - mostly bike carrying! and very little evidence of the track! If any other parts of the system were like this, there's been an amazing amount of work gone in to make it rideable. When I hit firetrail again I couldn't see the s/t opposite so I enjoyed easy riding on the f/t. Where Snake Track comes in, it looked clear, and some other bikes had come through, so it might also have been cleared. The return to trailhead track is also good.
So, good riding for the most part, but ugly through the inner loop section and near the little creeks. I reckon they'd probably appreciate a bit of work with saws and trail clearing - a few people could make a big difference with hand tools.

@Brian, @Kevin - a bloke I met out on the tracks at Stromlo on Sunday recons that he rode it last weekend or the weekend before and that the snake loop has been cleared. Might be worth checkin out again? If you do please make sure you report back as I am heading down in two weekends and would like to give it a whirl.

Amazing, and thank you, Berm, for letting me know. I'd planned to ride there this week, as I figured that would be the first place cleared. Apparently not. I'll try to get down and test out the other tracks nearer to the Bay to see if they've been cleared. There was some amazing work had been ploughed into preparing tracks between Mogo and the Bay, that would have added a lot of fun singletrack to the Dr. Maybe folks are a tad burned out, or maybe there's only a few track workers and they've been away somewhere. Perhaps having fun.

thats a shame. I have no idea on what group advocated the track,

@Cameron M - Yeah I tried to ride it last weekend and even though the storms were a month ago no one has bothered doing anything to clear the trail. You would be lucky to be able to ride more than 30 secs before having to get off and climb over fallen trees. That is not an exaggeration. I rode 8kms in an hour! Very disappointed. Least they can do is put a sign up at the start to say it is unrideable.

I wonder why the people in area have not done anything?

Anyone rode this after the storm at the Angy Doc's?

Hmmm... I should have looked here earlier! I found and rode this trail today, following instructions from the BB bike shop. Nice! Lots of smooth and fun riding - creeks and berms and native vegetation beside the track - a change from our normal riding. Yes, plenty of evidence of motor bikes on some of the tracks. Good fun, and heaps better than any of the ST I've located near Mogo and the Bay, before.

Fun track. Beware of motor bikes using the trails also.
