36 tooth rear cassettes? Hi my Salsa 1x9 is almost here. Santa should pick it up tomorrow. It will be a 1x9 with a 32 tooth up front and a 11-34 down back. I'd prefer a realistically priced and light 36 tooth at the back. Any realistic solutions that people have tried?

I wish, my X9 will only cope with a 34.

I think that FRM make a single alloy 36 tooth ring that you can sit inside of your 32 tooth cassette, then you just take out the 11. It might be a bit expensive though from memory.

I tried the Shimano HG61 which is a nine speed 12-36 - which is when i discovered my X9 wont cope with it. I picked it up from Chain Reaction Cycles for about $45.00 + p&h - just checking now they have it still but its now $32 and $8 for postage.

if you want a lower gear can't you just put a 30 on the front?

Hey Tim, glad you're enjoying it.  I'd only go back to more than one chainring if I knew I was going to be somewhere with a lot of hills, for a very long time.

To be honest you'll not feel a huge difference between 30 & 32.  I seem to remember some hills were easier when I had a 30, but it's marginal.  Check Sheldon Brown's site to see how many gear inches you save.  It ain't much I don't think.  A 30 might get you a few more/less metres up a hill, but a 32 feels more useful on the flat/down!
