Hey,
I often get to travelling and I was wondering if people are interested in discussing any notable rides they have done or heard about beyond our local region. The thing that got me started on this idea is that I happened across the following web page as I was checking out potential x-mas break destination (http://www.rideforrest.com.au/yaugher-trail-map). It looks like I might have to squeeze the mtb into the hatchback to try this one out.
Other places I have considered are Bermagui, Tathra, Mogo but it is hard to get a good idea unless people make comparisons to the rides we are doing.

It had rained all morning, and I was less than enthusiastic about getting back on the bike after lunch, but that was easily my favourite stage, and one of the most fun rides I've done. I waited for Dad at the start of that one and rode with him, which made it even more fun.
You've got to be ready for plenty of mud, this was one of the driest Januarys in the lead up but there was still plenty of mud, especially the last 10km of Montezuma Falls. I can imagine it would be slow going in a wet year.
Big tip though, that I've learnt for next time, wash and clean your bike VERY well after the last stage which has 10km of beach. I sprayed my bike at the hotel afterwards and left it for a week.
On the holiday aspect, we made it a family holiday, it was interesting doing the race having the 3 girls (all under 5) there. I think my wife was more exhasted at the end of each day than I was. So much to see and do, and drink and eat in Tassy, it would have been a shame to just do the race and come home.
We also had a few days in bendigo on the way down, found a single track loop out of town that was on the bendigo mtb website, but I think it was on private property, we did a 3.5km section twice (couldn't do more because of a locked gate.) It was fun though, very tight corners everywhere, little pinches up and down and lots of rocks. Very good for sharpening the skills up, there was virtually nowhere you could rest.
Permalink Reply by blondie on February 19, 2012 at 13:10 yes - apparently on our list is that ride from Ballarat to Bendigo - Wildside in two years and we are heading to the SS Nationals at Mt Bulla this year on our way back to heaven on wheels other people call Rotura
Wildside isn't on my list - I can't think of anything more horrible than a stage race on a bike! Just not my thing I think...
Permalink Reply by dangersean on February 20, 2012 at 12:58 ahem.. excuse my aptly named wife... but SS Nats are in Beechworth, VIC this year - not Mt Buller....
Permalink Reply by dangersean on May 10, 2012 at 15:58 dont you mean Glenrock (@ Newcastle)?

Permalink Reply by Russ on May 11, 2012 at 15:24 Having recently moved down to the Far South Coast from Canberra I have been trying a couple of the tracks down here. Tathra's main track known as Doolagharl is fantastic - recently rode the Tathra Enduro (only 50km) which centred around Doolagharl and certainly enjoyed the singletrack there. Some interesting obstacles/descents there, mainly confined to the track tagged 'bridges'.
Also, I think the singletrack network at Mandeni and Manna Park which link together to form a loop of around 17kms is well worth looking at. Unfortunately Mandeni did cop some damage with the recent heavy rains but would expect that by mid to end of this month (May 2012) all water will finally have drained away. Both facilities have camping style accommodation available and would make a pretty good road trip from Canberra for a weekend.
