The Berm

Canberra's Mountain Biking community network

Hey,

I often get to travelling and I was wondering if people are interested in discussing any notable rides they have done or heard about beyond our local region. The thing that got me started on this idea is that I happened across the following web page as I was checking out potential x-mas break destination (http://www.rideforrest.com.au/yaugher-trail-map). It looks like I might have to squeeze the mtb into the hatchback to try this one out.

Other places I have considered are Bermagui, Tathra, Mogo but it is hard to get a good idea unless people make comparisons to the rides we are doing.

I'm heading to Adelaide in August and will be riding Belair and Cuddly Creek ...
At least thats the intention :)
I'm looking forward to that ...

Will be stopping at Seymour in Vic on the way back too ... maybe some riding around there ...
I guess most of the time I head somewhere with the bike is for an event. Mogo was nice, I often head up to the blue mountains, wingello and have also been to forrest once but it was on a borrowed bike and just a short spin. Still it was enough of a tast to make me want to go back.

Depending on the area it can sometimes be hard to work out the navigational side of things. Still you can usually find someone who has posted a gps track and you can download that and follow.

To me mountain biking is about exploring new places. Sometimes the trails are not as good as we have locally as we get a bit spoilt but the adventure of a new place and new scenery more than makes up for it.
Rode around Slickrock Trail in Moab, Utah a few years ago - that was one tough ride. Ice and snow on some parts of the trail, ridiculously steep descents onto sand and then steep, sharp ascents that could hardly be ridden up.

Recently rode around the trails at Llandegla in North Wales. That was good fun and they have a great set-up and relationship with the forest harvesting company that owns the land. Logging occurs in the forest and people can still ride the trails - hmmmmmm.
Really it depends on the type of riding you like, I usually do the events and in doing so learn the new places, I'll rate them out of 10 as I go ;), so I've been to Canada (10 just awesome almost everywhere you go, I guess you won't be going that far), New Zealand (10 Christchurch and Rotorua both awesome no events but rode with my local coz eh bro), then locally, Wingello (7), Mogo (8), Nowra (Cabbage tree is awesome) (8.5), Lithgow (7.5), Del Rio (Sydney 24 hour near Wiseman's ferry) (6), Forrest (9). I'd love to go to Cuddly creek, Tathra and Bermagui to try them out they are meant to be great. I've only really started getting around the place and travelling for events the past year it is fun and worth it. I've done plenty of other fire road rides etc but events like the single track mind series have been great and maybe a good one to do would be the merida /x-fusion 6 hour at coondoo next month you don't have to ride 6 hours just do a bit have a break and do a bit more just have fun ;).
But as Milto says it is hard to work out your way sometimes without getting lost and the events usually take you on all the best tracks anyway. But a GPS would come in handy as long as you have the maps, but even then it is sometimes tricky.
Thanks for taking the time and effort on this post Kevin, this really adds to my perspective. I am also curious now on what your own personal ratings are for our local tracks? Stromlo, Sparrow, Majura P and maybe Kowen and Bruce ridge (me = 8, 8.5, 7.5, ?, and 7.5 receptively).
Just my prospective ;).
Stromlo 8, Sparrow 9, Majura 8.5, mind you I have not been to sparrow since the mont but mainly rate it higher due the the soil and flowing tracks, Majura I have always loved it and always find a good flowing loop (if you don't kow the area, you can get caught up doing ordinary tracks, it also has the option over the hill too), Stromlo's soil is ordinary and the tracks in sections need work, but I do go there more as it is close, and I still like it. Kowen and Bruce I have not been to since 2006 so I won't really comment. But riding in the Brindies in summer (not winter) I'd rate as a 8.5 too sometimes it is not the tracks it is the experiance and surrounds ;). I guess I like clean flowing trails I don't mind a few technical sections or technical climbs, but only a few and they have to be ridable for me ;).

Hi all

I had an afternoon at Wagga not l;ong ago & had a ball on their tracks a Pomingalarna Park.

Only 3 hours down the road it could even be a day trip with a few mates

Stu
Did an hours worth of great quality single Tracy before lunch today just inland of Surf Beach. I think it's part of the Angry Doc circuit. Go to Moruya bicycles web site for track directions, I'd give it an 8 for the section I did, near ridge rd and dog trap road.

Love the thread - matches my idea of mtb (new is almost always fun, and always worth a try) Yes, finding trail can be frustrating. I've spent more than a year wandering down the Bateman's Bay area, looking for the fabled smooth and delightful Angry Dr trails. (I'm Braidwood based) Sparrow 9. Majura 8. Stromlo 7. Kowen is a few years ago, and I'm not sure whether I was on what's commonly ridden nowadays, but I'd only give it 4 unless you can get in without huge uphills on fire road. Now for more obscure places: Cooma (Mt Gladstone (my old stamping ground) 8 if you know where to go) Bermagui 9 - but it's closed at present due to the storms on 30/5 (I was there to ride yesterday, but no go). Beechworth 9 (but my mate who lives there tells me they've rearranged the system again) Bright some 10, but much 7. Yackandandah 8 and it can be a mongrel finding track (or your way back!). Nail Can Hill (Albury) 9. Mt Beauty 7 overall but it's a huge network and there's some 9's to be done - check out the Survey track! Kyneton (Vic) some great 9 on the Great Dividing Trail, but some 5, too. Kyneton's local trails are a good 8. Chiltern forest 7. Tumut was a good 8 4 years ago. Wingello has some 10, but way too much fire trail. Goulburn rates 7. Oh, and I found good trail near Mogo, today: Maulbrooks Rd rates 9, the other stuff just W of Mogo is only worth 5 and the track near Tomakin is all fire trail. Gee, I must have been doing some riding in the last few years!
Oh, Munda Biddi in WA 3 - too much pea gravel, steep fire trail up and down, but some sweet ST, and some gorgeous railway embankment, as well as stunning scenery and camp huts.
PS anyone ridden the Mawson Trail?
Cracker of a post Brian, these are going to keep me searching for a while to come, maybe a couple of extra w'kends away. Ha, I see you were riding just a few kms away from us today.
Have ridden the Mawson Trail from Blinman to Melrose. Awesome scenery and kilometre after kilometre of rutted roads...... If you are doing it unsupported (as we did) you will find water (or the lack of it) a real problem. We were forced to drink bore water for a while. Brilliant ride, easy to navigate, would like to finish it off one day.
