I have read a bit about the Racing Ralphs with snake skin. Has anyone tried these? I have a set of evolutions which have sustained a cut to the wall so the snake skins sound like they will be significantly stronger than the evolutions and may be worth putting on the new flash wheels I built.

I think this says it all Thanks to JD

I have the tubeless version ready to put on, I am busting to try them out. I don't think you would be disapointed.

Oh plus I'd say that they should seal and be OK as a tubeless setup as that would have been how JD used them. But might be a good question if anyone has had experiance.

I have run these tyres for the last couple of months, including a Stromlo 3hr, 7hr and 1/3rd of a 24hr race, although at a much slower speed than JD of course.

I agree with what he says.  The Racing Ralph Evo Snakeskin is  the best tyre I've run by quite a long way.  It's just a shame about the price!!

What is the price???
In AU, about $110 or something each I think. From Wiggle - half that ;) but took 2+ months to come in stock
Oh OK - I thought they would be more as the evo's without the snake skin were $120 in a local shop.  They have them at Chain Reaction but none at Wiggle.

i am really impressed with the snakeskin version of this tyre. As you know, Stromlo eats tyres up if they are standard ones. I run these tubeless (converted) with about one scoop of True Blue Goo. Anything will work though. Aired up with the compressor first go. Held air fully overnight.

Pretty bulletproof, the extra layer of protection on the side inspires confidence through the sharp rocks at Stromlo. Out of curiosity, I ran them tonight at the dirt crit at stromlo also. Not too unhappy about the outcome there. They roll so fast with no rolling resistance (~22Watts - according to German testing).

i have also run the double defence version, however this just adds an extra belt beneath the tread (therefore heavier). I only ever have troubles with the sidewalls so the snakeskin version does the trick.

They are expensive retail in australia. However tyres are one thing that can transform the bike. Whilst i would love for you to go into Lonsdale Street Cyclery and see Trev and the guys for a good deal, you might also want to check out Wiggle and Chain reaction cycles for a slightly better (and more affordable) solution.

I've gone for the larger version (2.25) because of the lower rolling resistance offered. I am on a hardtail also.

Thanks everyone. I am now convinced. These will be my new race tyres.

I do like to share the love with the bike shops, it's important to support everyone to make sure they are still around when you need them. I don't often buy from the net as I like to see what i'm buying but I think in this instance, I will go with Chain Reaction as the savings really are substantial. Lonsdale Street have been my place of choice lately though now that they have Specialized (and I'm hoping some of that speed that their riders have will rub off on me - so far, no joy)  :o)

the tyre is great. i had a bit of fun with getting my one onto the tubeless wheelset, requiring the LBS to do it twice... side walls seem to be holding out, but finding the side knobs are starting to tear prematurely....(quicker than the centerknobs)....

I did a side wall on one of the snakeskins ones of these at the Mont yesterday. They are very tough but with all tyres they are not bullet proof! I will be heading to my local bike shop this week to get a couple of replacements. Last time I got them for under $100 so $120 for this tyre seems a bit pricey!

I think side wall slashes were not uncommon over the weekend. My team suffered two - but they weren't snakeskins. They are cheaper on-line at around $50. Ifd you can wait a week to get them :o)

I have been using 29er EVo snake skin RR.

I got through the scott and the mont and all riding between on the same set  up tubeless.

I have had one puncture in the tread, which was fixed with a patch.

Would highly recommend. The grip is slowly running out so will replace with the same ones again.

I had been previously happy with maxxis ikons, other than in the wet.
