hey all,
Was told this might be a great place to hookup some riding buddies. Basically the wife and I are passing through CBR and keen to get some riding time in on Jan 6 during the day - particularly Majura and Stromlo but really anywhere someone is willinng to go. Keen to ride for 3-4 hours at a comfortable, fast pace (does that make sense?) to explore the area. Wife wants to race the 6+6 category of the Nationals at Easter so this would be a nice reccy ride of some sorts :-)
Happy to pay our way via food and beer. We are solid riders, not elite, but we know one end of the bike from the other :-)
We have a car so totally mobile.
Also any suggestions on where to stay in CBR (ie rooms that we can take our bikes into without too much hassle).

I can't make a date this weekend unfortunately. Fairly quiet here obviously - it's Xmas and 2/3 of Canberra empties to the coast for a few weeks but hopefully someone will be around to show you the sights. If not, Stromlo is easy to navigate as it's well signposted. Majura is a bit more of a rabbit warren, but a small one, so park at the Majura Road entrance, climb over the gate and remember the big wide firetrail at the bottom of the hill to navigate back to, then hit the fun stuff. The area is fenced on all sides so if you hit one just head back to the flat stuff and you'll find the exit soon enough.
Re the accommodation Crowne Plaza is a MTB friendly hotel if you're at that end of the budget spectrum. They sponsor some events here and they'll certainly help you I would think and they're right in the centre of town. For some reason Quest (apartments) rings a bell for the same reason but I may be wrong.
If you're looking for something a little more, ahem, reasonable, Carotel is fine and it's not far from Majura either - you can ride there if brave and have a decent A-Z. Stromlo will be about 25 minutes drive.
BTW Sparrow Hill and East Kowen are do-able too if you have a spare day. About a 30 minute drive from the centre of town and if you ride both you'll clock up near enough 50k's, plus the main loop on each is well signposted so easily do-able sans guide.
Check the Trail Wiki tabs for more instructions on the venues.
Hope that helps and have a good time up here! Morgan
Permalink Reply by Canbaroo on January 3, 2012 at 17:39 I've hooked up with him Morgan for a Friday 6th ride.... anyone else who want's to join in is welcome.
9.00am Braddon KO an hour or so around Majura then a cross town retrace of the CP [Blk Mtn, Arberetum] up the hill at Stromlo [cafe stop at the top] down and maybe another loop up north [Willo Trail] and back along the cycle path to Braddon.... maybe 70 - 80k. At my race pace .... it's 'slow social' for most others.
Permalink Reply by Courtenay Lee Shoy on January 8, 2012 at 19:53 hey guys - back in Melbourne after spending a few days in Canberra. Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Canbaroo for being the most amazing host to Josie and I. Ended up riding 80km around Canberra including Majura, Mt Stromlo, Black Mtn, Bruce Ridge(?). You Canberra folk are very lucky to be blessed with such amazing singletrack linked so well together!!
Also a big thanks to Brian and Lesley for showing me around Sparrow Hill the day before. Just rocked up to the gate without really knowing where to go and these 2 guys kindly offerred to show me around. 23km of singletrack goodness had me smiling from ear to ear! The mountain bike community absolutely rocks :-)
Didn't get a chance to ride East Kowan but it just means we will have to get back to Canberra and ride that too :)
