The Berm

Canberra's Mountain Biking community network

So this is something I have been pushing for for many years now - culminating with me working with Makin Trax and meeting with the Chief Minister and the opposition in December last year, and talking with the Greens recently.  Its great to see

CBRE Richard Ellis are doing the initial planning work so lets hope that they get it right (don't mind the term "Walking Track" this I believe is just about trying to get the media to understand).

If it were up to you what would you like to see in a Centenary Track? (bearing in mind it will need to be a multi-use trail)

A fantastic idea. Has work already started on this? Three months doesn't seem like alot of time to complete such a trail.
The Press Release is misleading, the feasibility study is due to be complete by the end of September/October. Stage one of the trail is due to be complete (supposing that the CBRE study recommends the go ahead for the trail and it's multiuse nature)

The work we have done so far (and passed to the Government and CBRE for free) has identified ~140kms worth of trail, with a mixture of ~65% fire road and 35% new or refurbished single trail. The fire road we looked at was nice fire road (i.e. not the boring straight stuff...). We had a series of loops designed into the trail (allowing for between 10km and 30km) and it included lots of really interesting places (from Lanyon in the south and One Tree Hill in the north, some of the Murrimbidgee Corridor - and everywhere in between).

That was stage one, stage two included all of the Murrimbidgee corridor, a trail, through the Bullen range, out Tidbinbilla, linking Stromlo and Stony Creek (and the Murrimbidgee Corridor) and the Cotter Dam, blue range...I could go on!

Really exciting stuff

I think it would be great if people like the concept to write and let the Chief Minister know that it is a great idea - I already have :)
I'd like to see themed loops taking in some of Canberra's places of note. Themes could include The Arts, Science, Sport, Politics etc.
Some of them would be fairly obvious and largely stay in town - Politics would take in both houses and some of the other major govt departments and embassies etc. Sport would obviously hit the Institute but could also go out to Stromlo.

The science (or more specifically Space) one would be the one for us riders - start at Stromlo, out to Tidbinbilla then onto the site of the Orroral Valley and HonySuckle Creek tracking stations. Plenty of good riding to be had linking those sites.
I really like this concept. We certainly have discussed taking in historic locations and major tourist attractions but adding in different themes like this adds another dimension. Most excellent

Signage that promotes understanding of the multiple use nature of the trail

Routes that is also support commuter use.

Regional consultations on the off road trails that people are already using to link different parts of Canberra for fdiffernet purposes (recreational and commuting) - think big maps and felt tip pens.

I have seen the draft concept plan for this - it's looking pretty good so far.  Ainslie, Majura, North Gungahlin, One Tree Hill, Hall, Through Belco, Bruce Ridge, Black Mountain, Arboretum, SFP, Down to Mt Taylor, Farrar Ridge, Issacs Ridge, Red Hill, Parliament House, the Lake and back to Ainslie vie the war memorial.

I have made one or two comments on (what I think in my humble opinion) improving the design and making it more rider friendly and less walker focused.  I have suggested boosting single track to between 33% and 40% of the entire length, as well as climbing a few more hills.

Fingers crossed we can continue to progress this though the budget process

So no big maps and felt tip pens then?

It sounds like they have the destinations covered, but in order to avoid the problem we have with the sealed bike paths the desire lines are what are important. I am talking about the routes that riders have sussed out and prefer. It may be that the recreational routes are very different to the commuter routes. Personally I want a little adventure on my way to work, every day, not just on the weekend. It would be a shame not to tap into the routes that the broader community is already using.

Those insights are going to be very localised. You know what I am talking about, those little connectors behind schools, shops, or those long trails that run parallel to main roads that locals take for granted, but that planners dont know exist. Perhaps they could give some riders a GPS for a week or two and see what sort of network we could come up with.

This report is just about to be released.  I'll provide more details shortly

Ok folks, here it is for the reading.  Pretty exciting I think but what does everyone else think?

I would not be too concerned about the trail width or other bits and pieces...lets read through ad make the best of it err?

Attached is the full report, a .kmz file (for Google Earth) and a Summary of Major Stakeholder Issues

Of course no funding yet but...the odd letter of support would not be too bad at this stage

Anyone want to try and ride this? 2 Mornings. I think the northern end interests me more than the south but 2 half days would do it. Could be an interesting excercise and the report on the trip could be of value to the funding submissions.

Yep would love to

noting that the trails (or more properly) potential trails in the northern parts of the ACT don't exist yet (even as fire trails).  As I understand it 12 of the 19km of new sniggle would be build here (noting that there are other areas of sniggle that need to be upgraded too)

As a student/consultant I am pretty flexible these days but mornings are generally best for me

oh and I just live round the corner

Ok so lets do it.

Anybody else care to join us?

Does anybody know the northern end of the trail?

What about we start at the War memorial and try and follow the track with a GPS and see how we go.

I have a Garmin but no idea how to try and put that track into it. Anyone else know how to?

I''d love to be up for this, depending on timing though around family stuff, and got some races on weekends coming up...
